Taste and feeling coming back

This morning Shelby noticed that her medicine was not the best thing stuff. Yay! She's getting her taste back and can now start to feel her tongue and her throat. She is such a trooper. I am so proud of her. She had a rough night last night. She's had a lot of problems with congestion. This morning she is doing much better and getting rest.

Progress

Shelby has no desire to eat anything right now. She can't feel her mouth, lips, tongue, throat. She can't really taste anything. Travis went to Sonic last night to get her ice for her ice pack and she asked for a Dr. Pepper. She couldn't taste it. It was a real bummer for her. She's eaten protein shakes, and I made a smoothy for her this morning. She has also eaten some applesauce. Looking forward to her getting feeling back in her mouth. I was optimistic that she had not taken any pain medication since midnight last night. She was fine this morning, but about 11 was hurting pretty bad again. So we gave her her medicine and she is resting again. She is tired about being in the recliner and getting tired of being tired all the time. The doctor said day three the swelling should peak and after that start going down. I'm really looking forward to that, and Shelby is too. One of the cute things she did after surgery was ask about her mouth. Since she couldn't feel anything she couldn't tell how her mouth was. She felt like it was wide open all the time. After I reassured her it wasn't she asked about her teeth. I told her they were right above each other and they were closed. She was amazed because her teeth have never closed together. She has been very cute wanting to show her sisters and anyone she can. :)

Heading home

Doctor came in around 7 in the morning the day after surgery. He seemed impressed that Shelby didn't have any issues with getting sick after surgery. I am so glad. He said she was doing really well and was ready for discharge. After she took a nap we headed out.

View from our room

Pretty view outside. It was nice to see the cross out the window and what was going on.

The next morning

The contraption around Shelby's head is an ice pack. She feels much more comfortable with it on. And she must keep it on for 48 hours. She looks forward to the moustache tape coming off after 48 hours. It was put there to keep swelling down above her lips. She has cuts underneath her lips there.

Shelby's communications

Since we had a hard time understanding Shelby at first she wrote in a dry erase board at first. The first thing she wanted to know was if She was being massaged. It was a surprise to me but her legs were being massaged by some leg wraps. She loved it and would have loved to take them home. The second thing she wanted to know was where was Travis. He had gone down to get his keys from valet parking and get some things out of the car. And the third thing was she wanted to know if her friend Danielle had communicated with me. Danielle didn't get to make it to see her, but Shelby talked to her by text.

After surgery in our room

Here is Shelby after surgery. She was so exhausted as to be expected. She had a tube from her stomach out of her nose to clear out the contents of her stomach. They were concerned about blood settling in her stomach and making her sick. I had to give her small portions of fluid every 15 minutes to clear the fluid coming out of her stomach. About 10 pm we finally got to take the tube out. This made Travis feel alot better.  Him having to leave afterwards and go rest at my parents house was hard, but I'm glad he did so he could drive us home.  Seeing Shelby after surgery was such a relief for me. Not being able to be there with her was so hard. Leaving her in someone else's hands was extremely hard. Seeing Shelby after surgery was the hardest part for Travis. Not being able to take all the pain and what she was going through away was hard for him. For me it was a relief to be able to be there and take care of her.

Pre-op

She is so cute. Watching her leave pre-op was so hard. I'm so glad we were able to be there with her. As she left pre-op without us being able to with her I just felt my heart drop. I will never forget her looking back add she left. I am glad I'm a way she didn't have her glasses on and couldn't see the years starting to come from my eyes. After the nurse called to let us know she was in surgery and they were keeping her warm the tears still kept coming.  Once we were in the waiting room waiting for her to be finished it started getting easier waiting for it to be completed. They finally came to let us know surgery was completed. We talked to the surgeon and everything went well. Only an hour or so in recovery. It was 3 o'clock. We had been in the waiting room since 9am. Once 5o'clock came around, volunteers answering phones went home, and we were one of the families left in the waiting room we got anxious. We ended up calling the hospital to find out how we get in touch with recovery the nurse came out. Shelby had some trouble with pain afterwards and they kept her to get it under control. She had been taken up to her room.

Going back....

Here is a picture of Shelby as we are in the waiting room waiting to go back to pre-op.

Shelby has come home

We are home with Shelby from the hospital. She is already doing so much better. Happy to see her improving everyday. She has been complaining about her chest hurting this morning, so I got dressed and went to Reasor's to get Mucinex and some yogurt for her. By the time I got back she is knocked out. As I go to sit down on the couch I notice that she has taken my blanket. :) At least she is all warm and cozy and resting. Love her so much.
